Agenda Topics:
South Australia Case Study – Renewable Integration and November 2022 Islanding Event
Mark Thompson, Senior Engineer, Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO)
Cathryn McDonald, Network Emergency Manager, South Australia (SA) Power Networks
- Australia is a global leader in renewable energy integration. In November of 2022, they experienced a wind event that resulted in islanding and high levels of renewable penetration on the grid. We will be joined by the market operator and the distribution provider to discuss not only the event, but also Australia’s journey through their green energy transition. Topics discussed will include:
- Securely running the bulk power system while islanding
- Use of synchronous condensers and batteries
- Frequency response and contingency management
- Rooftop solar and balancing load/generation on distribution systems
This guest presentation is especially relevant for anyone interested in the great energy transition in the United States, including risks, challenges, and mitigations as we integrate renewable resources. This presentation is applicable for state policymakers and public utility commissions, plus our registered entities involved in transmission/distribution planning and operations, including Reliability Coordinators, Balancing Authorities, Transmission Operators, Transmission Planners, Planning Coordinators, and Distribution Providers.
