Every day we are faced with a series of choices in how we allocate our time and energy\, yet often the pressures life puts on us make us feel like we don’t have a choice. That was the experience of Niki Schaefer when she suffered a stroke at 38 years old as a result of placing more importance on her career\, parenting\, family\, friend and community obligations than she placed on her own mental and physical health. Niki will explain what happened and the lessons she learned on her road to recovery that helped her find health and happiness post-stroke. \n\n  \nThe value of workplace friendships  \nSam Queeno\, Director\, Physical Security\, AEP\, and Founder\, Best Friend Friday  \n\nYou may know Sam Queeno from his work as Director of Physical Security for AEP\, but beyond his security expertise\, Sam has another passion: the value of having a best friend at work. He started Best Friend Friday\, a weekly video series that highlights best friends at work\, in 2018\, and published a book on this subject as well in May 2024. This passion project has grown to become a framework that can be used both to improve relationships in the workplace and beyond. Sam will discuss the “best friend at work” concept and the value it can bring to your organization.

SUMMARY:Technical Talk with RF
DESCRIPTION:Agenda Topics: \nLevel 3 NERC Alert – Cold Weather Preparations for Extreme Weather Events \nDarrell Moore\, Director\, Situation Awareness\, NERC \n\nExtreme weather\, specifically winterization and cold weather preparation is one of the major challenges that the RF region faces annually. In light of some recent events\, NERC issued a Level 3 (essential action) NERC Alert. This presentation will provide an overview of the eight essential actions\, and a timeline for completion as we prepare for next winter. \n\nCompliance Monitoring Update – New Standards and Audit Approach / Walkdowns \nAsh Chappell\, Technical Auditor\, RF \n\nWith the recent implementation of EOP-011-2 and the future implementation of EOP-012-1\, there are new NERC Reliability Standards that are monitored to preserve and enhance the reliability of the Bulk Power System.  O&P will discuss what to expect during a compliance monitoring engagement regarding our audit approach and how these standards will be assessed in the field. \n\nRF Winterization Program – Survey\, Field Visits\, and Free Consulting \nJoseph Jagodnik\, Senior Reliability Consultant\, RF \n\nFor almost ten years\, RF has been collaborating with Generators outside of the audit space with annual surveys and site visits. RF will continue this program as we have seen it have dividends on reliable operations during cold weather. Join us for an update on what we learned from the visits last winter\, and our approach for the winter of 2023-2024. \n\nThese presentations are especially relevant to Balancing Authorities\, Generator Owners\, Transmission Operators\, and any segment of the electric utility industry impacted by cold weather. We also welcome state policy makers and those working in our shared critical infrastructures (e.g.\, natural gas) to come learn more about the steps that the ERO Enterprise (NERC and the regions) are taking to mitigate the risk. \nReference Materials: \n2023-07-17 Tech Talk \n2023-07-17 Cold Weather Winterization Tech Talk Presentation \n2023-07-17 NERC Alert Level 3 Tech Talk Presentation

SUMMARY:Technical Talk with RF
DESCRIPTION:Agenda Topics: \nSouth Australia Case Study – Renewable Integration and November 2022 Islanding Event \nMark Thompson\, Senior Engineer\, Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) \nCathryn McDonald\, Network Emergency Manager\, South Australia (SA) Power Networks \n\nAustralia is a global leader in renewable energy integration. In November of 2022\, they experienced a wind event that resulted in islanding and high levels of renewable penetration on the grid. We will be joined by the market operator and the distribution provider to discuss not only the event\, but also Australia’s journey through their green energy transition. Topics discussed will include:\n\nSecurely running the bulk power system while islanding\nUse of synchronous condensers and batteries\nFrequency response and contingency management\nRooftop solar and balancing load/generation on distribution systems\n\n\n\n\nThis guest presentation is especially relevant for anyone interested in the great energy transition in the United States\, including risks\, challenges\, and mitigations as we integrate renewable resources. This presentation is applicable for state policymakers and public utility commissions\, plus our registered entities involved in transmission/distribution planning and operations\, including Reliability Coordinators\, Balancing Authorities\, Transmission Operators\, Transmission Planners\, Planning Coordinators\, and Distribution Providers. \nReference Materials: \n2023-05-15 Tech Talk \n2023-05-16 Operational Experiences from the South Australia Solar Network \n2023-05-16 South Australia Separation Event

SUMMARY:Technical Talk with RF
DESCRIPTION:Agenda Topics:  \nEstablishing and Communicating System Operating Limits – Upcoming Changes \nDean LaForest – Project 2015-09 Chair 2019-2021 and Manager of Real-Time Studies at ISO-NE \nVic Howell – Project 2015-09 Chair 2015-2019 and Director of Reliability Risk Management at WECC \nStephen Whaite – Technical Auditor\, Operations & Planning Compliance Monitoring\, RF \n\nPlease join RF and the chairs of the Project 2015-09 Standard Drafting Team to discuss what a System Operating Limit (SOL) is\, what an SOL exceedance is\, and what is included in the NERC Reliability Standards framework surrounding SOLs. The use of SOLs is a foundational construct in the NERC Reliability Standards\, supporting the reliable operation of the Bulk Electric System (BES) by setting parameters within which the BES should be operated to provide for reliable pre- and post-contingency system performance. Standards Project 2015-09 resulted in FERC approval of a revised definition for SOL\, a new defined term System Voltage Limit\, major revisions to FAC-011 and FAC-014\, retirement of FAC-010-3\, and associated revisions to six other Reliability Standards – all effective April 1\, 2024.\nThe discussion around the use of SOLs in Operations Planning and Real-time Operations is especially relevant for System Operations and Operations Support personnel at Transmission Operators and Reliability Coordinators. Transmission Planning personnel at Transmission Planners and Planning Coordinators will also be impacted by the retirement of FAC-010-3 and associated revisions to other standards. Generator Owners and Transmission Owners may be impacted by changes to applicable Facilities in FAC-003\, PRC-002\, PRC-023\, and PRC-026.\n\n  \nOperational Analysis and Awareness (OAA) Update \nTony Purgar\, Senior Manager\, OAA\, RF \nKellen Phillips\, Principal Analyst\, OAA\, RF \nDwayne Fewless\, Principal Analyst\, OAA\, RF \n\nThis discussion will highlight the OAA group and its core responsibilities including an overview of the Event Analysis Process (i.e.\, reporting requirements\, cause coding\, trends); explanation on “what is an inquiry”; and a look into our Situational Awareness / Threat Intelligence activities and tools.\nThis discussion is intended for entities with functional responsibilities of the Balancing Authority\, Distribution Provider\, Generation Owner\, Generation Operator\, Reliability Coordinator\, Transmission Owner and Transmission Operator. It’s relevant to bulk power system operations personnel that deal with system disturbances\, situational awareness\, and threat intelligence monitoring from the cyber\, physical and operational perspectives.\n\nReference Materials: \nOAA Update_March2023 \n2023-03-20 Tech Talk \nSystem Operating Limits_20Mar2023
