Mike will discuss a potential path forward to train new OT cyber security staff.  \n ICS security without the guesswork: a risk-first approach   \nStacy Bresler\, Managing Partner\, Archer Energy Solutions  \nIn the electric sector\, ICS security decisions must balance security\, safety\, and reliability. Yet many programs are shaped by urgency rather than understanding. A high-profile incident\, a regulatory pressure point\, or a vendor’s promise can set priorities without answering the most important question: what is at risk and how do we know? This often leads to investments that look solid on paper but leave critical assets vulnerable in ways that are not immediately obvious.  \nCIP standards update  \nLew Folkerth\, Principal Reliability Consultant\, External Affairs\, RF  \nFERC announced action in three areas of the CIP standards on Sept. 18. This is a strategic shift designed to improve clarity and reliability\, especially during grid disturbances\, in an increasingly inverter-driven grid by establishing performance-based ride-through requirements tailored to their unique capabilities. \nHistorically\, IBRs were included under PRC-024 and PRC-026\, which were originally designed with synchronous generators in mind. However\, these standards do not adequately reflect the unique dynamic behavior and control capabilities of IBRs. PRC-029-1 establishes tailored ride-through requirements—both capability-based and performance-based—specifically for IBRs\, ensuring they remain connected and support grid stability during voltage and frequency excursions.   \n  \nRate of Change of Frequency and Underfrequency Load Shedding  \nJohn “JP” Skeath\, Senior Engineer\, NERC  \nJP Skeath will discuss Rate of Change of Frequency as it relates to underfrequency load shedding. With the ever-increasing mix of inverter-based resources powering the electric grid\, this relationship has gained importance\, as system inertia decreases.  \n  \nReference Materials\nTech Talk with RF – August 2025

Hosted every two years by the E-ISAC\, this is the largest grid security exercise in North America\, offering E-ISAC member and partner organizations a forum in which to practice how they would respond to and recover from coordinated cyber and physical security threats and incidents. The last event in 2023 saw more than 15\,000 participants come together from approximately 250 North American organizations\, including the electric industry\, cross-sector partners from gas and telecommunications\, and U.S. and Canadian government partners. Registration for lead planners and planners is now open to E-ISAC members and partners. \nNuclear energy’s place in supporting grid reliability  \nTimothy McJunkin\, Distinguished Researcher and Group Lead for Grid Integration and Control in the Power and Energy System\, Idaho National Laboratory  \nTimothy McJunkin will highlight analysis supporting nuclear energy’s role in a stably operating electric grid\, new efforts funded by the Department of Energy\, and a brief outlook for the progress in advanced reactor development. This is particularly relevant given the large load growth the grid is seeing\, which has led to momentum for some nuclear plants being restarted and potentially increasing the unit capacity at existing plants. \nMcJunkin leads work at the Idaho National Lab in implementing nuclear energy centered microgrids. His current research is centered around cross-cutting research to develop resilience solutions of the energy sector and human systems automation directed at critical-infrastructure. \nCurrent state of the CIP Standards  \nLew Folkerth\, Principal Reliability Consultant\, External Affairs\, ReliabilityFirst  \nLew Folkerth will give an overview on the current status of the NERC Reliability Standards pertaining to Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP)\, including a current look at the standards\, what’s coming soon\, and what standards are in progress.   \nReference Materials\nTech Talk with RF – April 2025

Every day we are faced with a series of choices in how we allocate our time and energy\, yet often the pressures life puts on us make us feel like we don’t have a choice. That was the experience of Niki Schaefer when she suffered a stroke at 38 years old as a result of placing more importance on her career\, parenting\, family\, friend and community obligations than she placed on her own mental and physical health. Niki will explain what happened and the lessons she learned on her road to recovery that helped her find health and happiness post-stroke. \n\n  \nThe value of workplace friendships  \nSam Queeno\, Director\, Physical Security\, AEP\, and Founder\, Best Friend Friday  \n\nYou may know Sam Queeno from his work as Director of Physical Security for AEP\, but beyond his security expertise\, Sam has another passion: the value of having a best friend at work. He started Best Friend Friday\, a weekly video series that highlights best friends at work\, in 2018\, and published a book on this subject as well in May 2024. This passion project has grown to become a framework that can be used both to improve relationships in the workplace and beyond. Sam will discuss the “best friend at work” concept and the value it can bring to your organization.
